President Abbas meets Jordan’s monarch in Amman

AMMAN, Wednesday, April 27, 2022 – President Mahmoud Abbas met today with His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan at Al Husseiniya Palace in Amman.

During the meeting, President Abbas briefed King Abdullah on the latest political developments in the Palestinian arena and the ongoing Israeli escalation in the occupied territories. The discussions focused on ways to protect the occupied city of Jerusalem and its holy sites, and to enhance coordination on issues of mutual concern.

President Abbas stressed the need to pressure the Israeli government to halt unilateral measures, respect signed agreements, and cease its continued aggression against the Palestinian people. He underscored the importance of intensifying joint Palestinian-Jordanian efforts to mobilize international action to stop Israeli practices and violations against the Palestinian people, their land, and their holy sites.

The President reaffirmed the importance of adhering to the terms of reference of the peace process and United Nations resolutions, as well as the need to provide international protection for the Palestinian people under occupation. He called for a return to a political horizon to end the prolonged Israeli occupation of the State of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

President Abbas expressed his appreciation for Jordan and King Abdullah II’s steadfast positions in support of the Palestinian cause at all levels and in international forums. He emphasized Palestine’s commitment to strengthening the brotherly relations and cooperation between the two countries and peoples.

For his part, King Abdullah II reaffirmed Jordan’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people and their just cause, emphasizing Jordan’s position in support of the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. He stressed Jordan’s ongoing efforts, in coordination with regional and international partners, to halt Israeli violations and to preserve the historical and legal status of the holy sites in Jerusalem under the Hashemite Custodianship.
