RAMALLAH, Friday, February 11, 2022 – President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday evening urged Germany to intervene and help halt Israeli actions that are undermining peace efforts.
During a meeting with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah, President Abbas stressed the importance of international and European Union (EU) efforts, particularly from Germany, to pressure Israel to stop measures that obstruct the two-state solution and sabotage peacemaking.
He briefed Baerbock on the latest developments in the Palestinian arena, particularly the outcomes of the recent session of the Palestinian Central Council (PCC), and affirmed that the Palestinian leadership will not accept the continuation of the current situation in which Israel persists in entrenching its occupation and racist practices in the territories occupied since June 1967.
President Abbas expressed gratitude to Germany for its support in building Palestinian institutions and infrastructure, and reaffirmed Palestine’s commitment to strengthening friendly relations with Germany in the interests of both peoples.
For her part, Baerbock—who is on her first visit to the Middle East since assuming office, from February 9 to 12—reiterated Germany’s support for peace based on the two-state solution and United Nations resolutions. She also pledged continued economic support for the Palestinian people.
