RAMALLAH, Saturday, November 27, 2021 – President Mahmoud Abbas today received Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi, who is on an official visit to Palestine, and discussed with him several key issues and the latest political developments on the ground.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Safadi, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Riyad al-Maliki said the meeting was a continuation of the ongoing coordination between the Palestinian and Jordanian leaderships to confront the challenges facing the Palestinian cause in the coming period.

For his part, Safadi said his visit comes as part of efforts to create a genuine political horizon that leads to a comprehensive and just peace based on the two-state solution, which ensures the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as its capital.

“The current status quo cannot continue. There is no way for matters to remain in the stalemate they are in now. A real international movement is required to lead us toward active engagement in resolving the Palestinian issue, which remains Jordan’s central priority,” Safadi said.

He added that the discussions focused on the importance of securing the economic support needed for the Palestinian Authority to continue providing services to the Palestinian people, maintaining calm on the ground, and opening a credible political horizon that can lead to a just peace.

On support for UNRWA, Safadi noted that Jordan, in partnership with Sweden, had organized an international conference to mobilize financial backing for the Agency to sustain its services to Palestine refugees in line with its UN mandate.

Regarding the situation in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied Jerusalem, Safadi said: “This is a fundamental issue for Jordan. Legally, we have submitted all our documents proving the rights of Sheikh Jarrah’s residents to their homes. Politically, the Kingdom is doing everything possible to prevent the displacement of the people of Sheikh Jarrah from their homes.”
