Ramallah, September 21, 2025 – President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's official recognition of the independent and sovereign State of Palestine, as well as Canada's offer of partnership in building a peaceful and promising future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel.
Canadian Prime Minister Carney stated that the recognition of the State of Palestine strengthens the efforts of those seeking peaceful coexistence and the end of Hamas' rule. He added that this recognition does not give any legitimacy to terrorism, and acknowledged the Palestinian Authority's pledges to reform and implement its obligations.
President Abbas praised Canada's recognition of the independent State of Palestine, stressing that it is a crucial step toward achieving a just and lasting peace in line with international legitimacy resolutions.
The President affirmed that Canada's recognition of the Palestinian people's right to self-determination, freedom, and independence paves the way for the implementation of the two-state solution, allowing the State of Palestine to live side by side with the State of Israel in security, peace, and good neighborliness.
President Abbas emphasized that the top priorities today include: achieving a ceasefire; ensuring the entry of aid and the release of all hostages and prisoners; securing a full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip; enabling the full assumption of the State of Palestine's responsibilities by the State of Palestine; commencing recovery and reconstruction; and ending settlement activity and settler terrorism.
The President reiterated all the commitments and reforms pledged by the State of Palestine in his recent official letter to the Canadian Prime Minister.
