RAMALLAH, September 21, 2025 – President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's official recognition of the independent and sovereign State of Palestine, recognizing the aspirations of the Palestinian people for statehood.

"Today's recognition, alongside [those of] Britain and Canada, is part of coordinated international efforts to create an appropriate climate for implementing the two-state solution."

President Abbas praised Australia's recognition of the independent State of Palestine, stressing that it marks a crucial step toward achieving a just and lasting peace in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.

The President stressed that Australia's recognition of the Palestinian people's right to self-determination, freedom, and independence paves the way for the implementation of the two-state solution, allowing the State of Palestine to live side by side with the State of Israel in security, peace, and good neighborliness.

President Abbas affirmed that the top priorities today include achieving a ceasefire, facilitating the entry of aid, releasing all hostages and prisoners, ensuring the full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, enabling the State of Palestine to assume its full responsibilities, commencing recovery and reconstruction, and ending settlement activity and settler terrorism.

The President reiterated all the commitments and reforms undertaken by the State of Palestine in the official letter he recently sent to the Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
